3Now with firmware updates the unit is better but still has an issue yet to be resolved  Sep 13, 2008
I purchased this on advance order so was one of the "beta testers." If it wasn't for the firmware updates which were obtained through an audio video forum, I would be very unhappy with this purchase due to several serious problems with this unit and others produced in 2007. There have been 3 firmware updates since the release last fall which addressed most of the problems including audio lock on problems. No information about them is posted on the Onkyo website. Customer support is worthless. The unit can only be updated using the serial port. The last remaining problem is a color space issue when using the Reon. Onkyo continues to fail to address this issue so many of us who belong to the forum do not even use the Reon. Since Onkyo hasn't been forthcoming about updates and they have now released their new product line, it is not likely there will be any more firmware updates. People purchasing the new product line have not yet confirmed on the audio video forum whether the new line has the same issue. Hopefully they don't or they will be in the same boat the rest of us who bought the 2007 line are in. I will never buy another Onkyo product again. It's unfortunate rather than make their product better for their existing customers they continue to choose to ignore us. If it wasn't for the firmware updates obtained throught the forum I would have given the unit 2 stars. Poor customer support and the last remaining issue give it a 3.

1Poor customer Service  Jan 16, 2008
I gave this product one star because I couldn't give it zero.

This product has out of the box issues with it's video processer altering black levels of content streamed through the receiver.

Onkyo has issued a firmware update to fix the issue, however, if you're not an active member of the A/V community, and didn't go out seeking information about this firmware update on highly specialized message boards, there is no way you'd have known about it and the receiver would be altering the black levels of the signals being run through it.

Onkyo has no way to notify it's REGISTERED owners of firmware updates for their product. I found out about the update on a message board and took my unit to an authorized service center for the update. Upon emailing the customer service department asking them why my specific unit had old firmware even after taking it to the onkyo authorized service center they were unresponsive and rude. After escalating the issue to the customer service supervisor, Jack Cooper, I was told I would not get any information about why my firmware hadn't been updated or future firmware updates because it was proprietary information. When I replied asking him if we could speak on the phone so I could get the information I needed he said there was "no need for us to talk" and they had already given me as much information as they were willing to provide.

Other AV companies like Denon and Yamaha do a better job of notifying their customers of these types of updates and I would recommend purchasing one of those products instead of this or any other Onkyo.

Consumer Reports Says: Buy HDTV at Amazon!

Washington, D.C. (July 2010) -- When it comes to price, Consumer Reports says shoppers are most likely to find the best deals online. And the publication called three ecommerce sites "standouts" in this year's Consumer Reports ratings of electronics stores: Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com and B&H (bhphotovideo.com)

The magazine's survey was based on more than 38,000 purchases of electronics, including flat-screen TVs, between January 2009 and June 2010. The report indicated that online stores consistently offered better prices. (The magazine's full report can be found in its July 2010 issue.)

"
Buying online can be better," the magazine said in a press release. "The higher-rated electronics retailers in Consumer Reports annual reader survey are Web sites. Readers who bought online rated their overall satisfaction at 90 out of 100 -- higher than those who bought in a store. Additionally, many Web merchants offer free shipping, even on TVs, which could spare the hassle of struggling to fit a bulky carton in the car or paying a local store for delivery."

Consumer Reports said that while no single retailer scored excellent in all shopping categories, Amazon.com came closest.
